TikTok said late Friday that its service would “go darkish” for its 170 million American customers on Sunday within the face of a federal ban over fears that its Chinese language possession poses a menace to the US’ nationwide safety.

The corporate stated in a press release posted to its web site and on X that “sadly TikTok will likely be pressured to go darkish on January 19” until the Biden administration assures Apple, Google and different firms that they won’t be punished for delivering TikTok’s companies in the US.

The assertion was TikTok’s newest try to stress the administration to grant it a reprieve from a regulation, upheld by the Supreme Courtroom on Friday, that might successfully ban its service beginning Sunday.

The regulation says that app shops and main cloud computing suppliers can’t ship TikTok to U.S. customers until the corporate is bought by its Chinese language father or mother firm, ByteDance, to a non-Chinese language proprietor.

TikTok didn’t element what would occur on Sunday, together with whether or not it could voluntarily shut itself down or just stop to operate as a result of it could lose entry to companies it wants to remain on-line.

The assertion got here after the Biden administration signaled that federal officers wouldn’t instantly take motion in opposition to Apple, Google and the opposite firms below the regulation.

Lisa Monaco, the deputy lawyer normal, stated in a press release after the Supreme Courtroom’s ruling that the method would play out “over time.” The White Home press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, stated that imposing the regulation would fall to the incoming Trump administration, which takes workplace on Monday.

TikTok stated that these feedback weren’t sufficient to fulfill different firms that they’d not run afoul of the regulation in the event that they continued to distribute and preserve the app. These firms may face penalties as excessive as $5,000 for every TikTok consumer who accesses the app inside the US after the ban takes impact.

“The statements issued at this time by each the Biden White Home and the Division of Justice have failed to supply the required readability and assurance to the service suppliers which are integral to sustaining TikTok’s availability to over 170 million Individuals,” the corporate stated.
