The Republican-led Senate voted Thursday to verify Kash Patel as the brand new FBI director regardless of questions on whether or not he has the {qualifications} and the temperament to guide the nation’s strongest legislation enforcement company.

Patel, who had been a fierce critic of the bureau, was confirmed by a 51-49 vote, with Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski becoming a member of all Democrats in opposing him.

President Trump's nominee to be FBI Director, Kash Patel arrives for a meeting on Capitol Hill on Dec. 11, 2024 in Washington, D.C.

It caps a outstanding rise for Patel, who has labored as a public defender, federal prosecutor and congressional aide earlier than serving as a nationwide safety official in President Trump’s first time period. He later emerged as a fixture in MAGA world, a right-wing podcast common and a Trump loyalist.

Republicans welcomed his affirmation. They argue that the FBI has unfairly focused conservatives in recent times, they usually see Patel as somebody who will repair that purported drawback.

They pushed Patel’s nomination over the road within the face of fierce opposition from Democrats, who voiced issues about Patel’s health for the job and his skill—and even need—to take care of the FBI’s conventional independence the White Home.

A collection of Trump government appointees

On Thursday morning, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee gathered in entrance of FBI headquarters to talk out towards Patel.

“Mr. Patel will probably be a political and nationwide safety catastrophe, if confirmed,” stated Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the panel’s prime Democrat.

“I am satisfied he has neither the expertise, the judgment nor the temperament to guide the FBI,” Durbin added. “My Senate Republican colleagues are willfully ignoring myriad purple flags about Mr. Patel, particularly his recurring intuition to threaten retribution towards his perceived enemies. That is a particularly harmful flaw for somebody who seeks to guide the nation’s strongest home investigative company for the subsequent 10 years.”

Neither of Patel’s quick predecessors served out the job’s full 10-year time period. Trump fired then-director James Comey in 2017, and handpicked Christopher Wray to interchange him.

After Trump’s election win final November, he tapped Patel to guide the FBI, successfully pushing Wray out of the job.

Not like these two males, Patel has no expertise as a senior legislation enforcement official. That has fueled questions on his {qualifications} to guide the FBI.

However the pushback to his nomination has centered extra round his loyalty to Trump and his previous statements about rooting out what he calls the “deep state” and going after his and Trump’s perceived political enemies, together with on the FBI.

Kash Patel during the 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference in Fort Washington, Md. on Feb. 23, 2024. President-elect Trump has nominated Patel to lead the FBI even though the agency's current director, Christopher Wray, has more than two years left on his term.

In a single podcast look, Patel vowed to close down FBI headquarters on Day 1 and reopen it as a “museum of the deep state.”

At his confirmation hearing, Patel sought to deflect questions on his previous feedback, telling lawmakers “any accusations leveled towards me that I’d one way or the other put political bias earlier than the Structure are grotesquely unfair.”
