Funeral providers for former Illinois Gov. George Ryan can be held this week in Kankakee.
Ryan — a Republican who served within the Illinois Home, as Illinois secretary of state, Illinois Home speaker, lieutenant governor and in the end because the state’s thirty ninth governor — died Friday at 91. He was identified for enacting a state moratorium on the loss of life penalty, ultimately resulting in its abolition within the state. Ryan was indicted on fraud and racketeering expenses and served six years in jail.
Visitation can be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Schreffler Funeral House in Kankakee, in accordance with Ryan’s obituary. A memorial can be held at Asbury United Methodist Church on Thursday at midday.
