The Nationwide Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is issuing a name for artists enthusiastic about creating statues for President Trump’s Nationwide Backyard of American Heroes.

The federal company says the grant is a part of “the preparation for the nation’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026” and can embody “life-size statues of 250 nice people from America’s previous who’ve contributed to our cultural, scientific, financial, and political heritage.”

    Which American heroes?

The record contains presidents, scientists, artists, athletes and different notable figures who’ve formed American historical past and tradition together with Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein, Sally Journey, Sacagawea, Sitting Bull, John Singer Sargent, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Lauren Bacall, Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth and Kobe Bryant. (Full list is here.)

    How a lot cash?

The grant notice says awards shall be “as much as $600,000” with a “per-unit restrict of $200,000 per statue, and candidates are restricted to a few statues.” The overall price ticket for the backyard is $34 million, with $30 million put aside for the statues.

A towering statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee is removed in Richmond, Va., in September 2021. It was one of many monuments and statues to Confederate leaders removed or relocated following protests after George Floyd's murder in 2020.

The place will the backyard be?

No web site has been chosen for the backyard but, however in March, South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden wrote a letter to Trump providing  land in the Black Hills that he says is within reach of Mount Rushmore.

    Why is that this occurring?

Trump has taken an aggressive method in direction of reshaping cultural establishments since taking workplace three months in the past. He took over the Kennedy Center, issued an executive order that stated, partially, the Smithsonian Establishment had “come underneath the affect of a divisive, race-centered ideology” and has allowed DOGE (the Division of Authorities Effectivity) to cancel tons of of Nationwide Endowment for the Humanities grants to organizations throughout the nation.

In March 2025, the University of South Alabama presented its Annual Songwriter Keynote, a conversation and concert event funded, in part, by a grant from the Alabama Humanities Alliance. Gulf Coast artist Robby Amonett, pictured above, live-painted the event.

DOGE additionally put the workers of the Institute of Museum and Library Companies (IMLS) on paid depart, putting many of the federal company’s grants in limbo. Grants from the IMLS help museums and libraries throughout america.
