In a letter citing NPR’s recent reporting on the Trump administration’s transfer to amass $400 million of Teslas, U.S. Reps. Gregory Meeks of New York, the rating member of the Home Committee on Overseas Relations, and Jared Moskowitz of Florida, who’s the highest Democrat on the committee’s oversight subcommittee, stated the plans signify “a critical violation of federal procurement legal guidelines” that might “unlawfully enrich Mr. Musk,” the billionaire tech mogul serving as a prime official within the White Home.

Earlier this week, Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut also wrote Rubio a letter demanding particulars about plans to buy Teslas.

A Tesla Cybertruck moves along the beach in Boca Chica, Texas, on Nov. 18, 2024.

Final month, a State Division spokesperson told NPR the $400 million determine was “an estimate,” and that there at the moment are no plans of shifting ahead with the acquisition. The spokesperson stated a plan to start finding out the viability of utilizing Teslas as armored autos first began within the Biden administration.

A doc from the Biden White Home obtained by NPR reveals that the State Division deliberate to spend $483,000 on electrical automobile acquisition in 2025, lower than 1% of the $400 million estimated expenditure that first confirmed up in a spreadsheet of anticipated State Division contracts. When experiences first circulated of the spreadsheet merchandise, a State official edited the doc to say the award was for “armored electrical autos,” not “armored Tesla,” which the lawmakers homed in on of their letter to Rubio on Friday.

“This raises critical questions on whether or not the Division not solely scrubbed the doc to take away any references to Tesla but additionally might have backdated the publicly obtainable documentation to provide the misunderstanding that each factor of those procurement plans – together with the $400 million worth – originated within the prior Administration,” wrote the Democratic congressmen.

The State Division and Musk didn’t return requests for remark.

The lawmakers ask Rubio if State Division officers deliberately modified the electrical automobile buy quantity from $483,000 to $400 million, who oversaw the change and for proof that the contract has been “definitively deserted.”

Whereas the Biden administration doc obtained by NPR seems to point out the push for the federal government to purchase $400 million of Teslas began below Trump, who precisely put the merchandise within the spreadsheet, and at whose route, stays unclear.
