    DOJ sues Chicago and Illinois over ‘sanctuary’ laws : NPR

    The Division of Justice is suing the Metropolis of Chicago, the state of Illinois and Prepare dinner County over their “sanctuary legal guidelines” that restrict cooperation with immigration authorities.

    The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court docket in Illinois, accuses these jurisdictions of “making it tougher for, and intentionally impeding, federal immigration officers’ capacity to hold out their tasks.” 

    President Trump and his appointees have usually threatened to punish “sanctuary cities” and states earlier than.     Mayor Brandon Johnson told NPR’s Morning Edition that Chicago will stand by its insurance policies.

    “We’re agency in that our police division is not going to intervene or take part in any means” in immigration enforcement, Johnson stated final month. “Whether or not you are undocumented, whether or not you’re searching for asylum or whether or not you are searching for an excellent paying job, we will combat and arise for working individuals.”
