An American Airways passenger aircraft carrying 64 folks has crashed into the Potomac River close to Washington, DC after colliding midair with a army helicopter on a coaching train late on Wednesday, prompting a significant emergency response and the grounding of all flights.

The passenger aircraft was about to land at Reagan Nationwide Airport after flying from Kansas.

American Airways, whose subsidiary operated the flight, mentioned “there have been 60 passengers and 4 crew members on board the plane”.

A US Military official mentioned the helicopter concerned was a Black Hawk mannequin carrying three troopers. That they had been on a “coaching flight”, a separate army spokesperson mentioned in an announcement.

Washington police mentioned “there isn’t any confirmed info on casualties right now.”

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the grounding of all planes at Reagan Nationwide, and Washington’s police mentioned on X that “a number of companies” have been responding to the crash website within the Potomac.

The final main deadly US crash was in 2009, when Continental Flight 3407 from New Jersey to Buffalo, New York crashed and killed all 49 folks on board.
